Fixing A Clogged Drain

Having a clogged drain can be a real pain. It is not a good feeling to go into a bathroom or a kitchen and not be able to use the sink because the pipes are clogged. There are a lot of different reasons you may have a clog, but more often than not it is going to be mineral buildup, or something being put down the sink that does not belong. No matter what the clog is from it needs to be taken care of as quickly as possible. When it come to fixing a clogged pipe it is best to go through a couple steps.

Liquid Drain Cleaner

One of the very first things that you should do if you are hooked up to city sewer is put down some liquid drain cleaner. The liquid drain cleaner has a PH of well above 7 so it is basic. The basic nature of the fluid means that it will accept electrons and help dissolve materials away. The liquid drain cleaner is extremely effective in getting rid of mineral buildup, and is very good at dissolving most materials. However, if you are on a septic system you need to be very careful when using liquid drain cleaners as they can kill the bacteria in the septic system.

Pipe Snake

The next step that you should take if a liquid drain cleaner does not do the job is a pipe snake. Pipe snakes are cables that are used to physically dislodge and push the clog out of the way. The good news is that these cables come in all different sizes so they are easy to use. If the plumbing takes a sharp angle then there is a good chance that you will need to use a smaller snake to get to the clog.

If you have tried steps one and two and you are still having a problem with the clog then it may be time to call a plumber. Unless you have training as a plumber the first two steps are about as far as a normal homeowner should go. If you are still having a problem then there is a good chance that the clog could actually be a much worse situation. If a pipe snake or liquid drain cleaner does not get rid of the problem, the pipe could be kinked or it could also be collapsed. A plumber will be able to fix whatever problem you are having.
